One green list country now has cases rate over four times higher than Ireland

Malta looks set to be booted off the green list after a massive rise in their cases per 100,000 people incidence rate.

The European country now has a rate of 28.4 for the last two weeks after an extremely sharp rise in recent days.

Countries need to have a rate the same as Ireland's or even lower if they are to qualify for the list.

Ireland's rate is also rising and stands at 6.7, more than four times smaller than that of Malta.

The green list is to be reviewed every few weeks with Malta unlikely to be deemed safe and allowed on the list once a revision is made.

Italy is also rising but with a rate of 5.7 they look safe on the list for now.

The United Kingdom also appears to be closing the gap on Ireland and how has a rate of 12.6 despite imposing a lockdown in the Manchester area on Thursday night.

The list of countries is to be reviewed every two weeks and is due to be changed next on August 4 after being released on July 21.

And the Department of the Taoiseach said it's "unlikely" it will be altered before then despite the rise and fall in cases in some countries.
