Almost 30% of voters in the capital have not settled on their choice for a new Bangkok governor, a KPI poll said on Friday, as the group could threaten favourite Chadchart Sittipunt, despite his lead in the contest.

The late survey by King Prajadhipok's Institute showed 27.3% living in the inner part of Bangkok were undecided on the candidate for the new Bangkok governor. The similar percentage, 27.2%, was shown among voters living on the edge of the capital, while 18.7% of people in districts between the two zones have not made up their mind.

Mr Chadchart still commands the lead as about 30% of the voters living in inner, central and suburban districts of Bangkok are expected to cast their ballots for him in the city election on June 28.

"Although Mr Chadchart still leads in all districts in Bangkok, the high percentage of uncertain and undecided voters could be a factor that changes the course of the contest," the KPI pollsters observed.

The institute divided 50 districts in the capital into three zones:

  • Inner districts : Bang Kholaem, Bang Rak, Bangkok Noi, Chatuchak, Dusit, Huai Khwang, Klong Toey, Phra Nakhon, Pormprap Sattruphai, Ratchathawi, Samphanthawong
  • Central districts : Bang Kapi, Bang Kae, Bang Phlat, Chomthong, Lat Phrao, Phasicharoen, Prawet, Sai Mai, Suan Luang
  • Suburban districts : Bang Bon, Don Muang, Lat Krabang, Nong Chok, Thawi Wattana

The pollsters surveyed the opinions of 1,600 voters in all districts from May 22-25.

The gubernatorial election will be held with 18 candidates vying for the governor position and 258 contenders fighting to be 50 district councillors.
