One defender stays at Stirling Albion while another one moves on

Defender Adam Cummins is the latest Stirling Albion player to agreed a new deal to remain at Forthbank for the 2022/23 campaign.

But fellow central defender Martin McNiff will not be lining up alongside him.

The experienced Cummins joined the club from Stranraer last summer and made 32 appearances across all competitions last season.

The former Motherwell and Queen’s Park centre-half scored twice – ironically both against his previous side Stranraer – in a 1-1 draw at Forthbank in October and 3-3 draw at Stair Park at the beginning of the year.

Cummins (29) began his career at Motherwell and had a spell on loan at Forthbank when Stirling were plying their trade in League One before a switch to Welsh club Bangor City.

McNiff previously earned promotion with both Dumbarton and Clyde and joined Albion last summer after five years at Broadwood. He made 24 starts and four substitute appearances, scoring three times.

Binos boss Darren Young has already re-signed defenders Paul McLean, Jordan McGregor and Ross McGeachie, while Kyle Banner and Aaron Dunsmore can also play at the back.

Three new players have arrived at the club so far – East Fife midfielder Ross Davidson, Stenhousemuir striker Robert Thomson and East Fife winger Danny Denholm – while Dunsmore’s loan deal from the Bayview side has been made permanent.

Denholm put pen to paper last week following the departure of Nathan Flanagan. The 31-year-old worked with Young at Bayview and has good experience in a career that has taken in spells with Forfar Athletic, Livingston and Arbroath.

The midfielder made 30 league appearances for East Fife in the season just ended – 23 starts and seven as a substitute – nettingfour times in League One, but was unable to help the Fife club avoid relegation after six years in the third tier.

Meanwhile, Stirling Albion will discover their Premier Sports Cup opponents when the draw for the group stage is made today at 1pm.

It will be shown live by Premier Sports via their FreeSports channel. It is available on Freeview HD channel 65, Sky HD channel 422, Virgin HD 553, TalkTalk 64 and BT Vision channel 64.

There are 40 clubs in the group stage draw, which will be seeded but not regionalised this season following six years of the north/south split.

Celtic, Rangers, Hearts, Dundee United and Motherwell are exempt until round two after qualifying for Europe, but Aberdeen and Hibs are potential opponents for the Binos.

Only the eight group winners and three best runners-up will qualify for the last 16, but Stirling almost made it through their section last season, beating Cove Rangers and Peterhead and defeating Inverness CT on penalties, with their only defeat coming against top-flight Hearts.

Matches will be played on July 9/10, July 12/13, July 16/17, July 19/20 and July 23/24, with the new league season starting on Saturday, July 30.
