"One day he will kill someone" says Perth rape victim

A victim of serial Perth rapist Stefan Scott has spoken out about her ordeal and how she believes he could kill when he is released from prison.

Katie Mackinnonn (33) was beaten, choked and raped throughout her 10-month relationship with the serial sex beast.

She has bravely spoken out after Scott (26) was jailed for 12 years earlier this month for the violent abuse of six women, and for raping three of them repeatedly – including Katie, who has bravely waived her right to anonymity.

In an exclusive interview with our sister title the Daily Record, Katie said: “I can’t really describe how it feels when you are with someone like him. Not only was he raping me, he was choking me until I thought I was going to die.

“More than once I thought, ‘This is it, I’m taking my last breaths. I’ll never see my kids again’.

“I’ve had to think long and hard about putting myself out there but after talking it over with my partner, Andrew, we felt that I should, to warn others.

“When he gets out, the first thing on his mind will be to get another woman under his power and, if he succeeds, one day he will kill someone.

“Women need to look at his face and remember it, and remember his name, because he will be out, and he’ll only be in his 30s, and there’s only one thing he wants women for. He’s not interested in affection.”

Scott was convicted at the High Court in Glasgow of 23 charges of rape, assault and abusive behaviour committed between December 2010 and June last year in Perth, Pitlochry and Dundee.

Sentencing him in Edinburgh, trial judge Lord Burns said the rape attacks where women were throttled to the danger of their lives were especially serious.

Jailing Scott, from Perth, for 12 years, Lord Burns ordered that he should be kept under supervision for a further four-year period on release.

Katie had tried hard to get away from Scott, who she started seeing when he was 17 and she was 25.

She said: “He was convicted of raping me on specific occasions when he almost killed me by throttling me but once he became abusive, early in our relationship, every sexual contact was rape.

“If you are terrified of someone and they beat you, threaten you, tell you they’ll make sure you never see your kids, you’re not consenting to have sex with them, you’re just not fighting back through fear.

“That’s something the justice system doesn’t recognise.”

He threatened and terrorised her, even breaking into her home when she was out on one occasion, getting into bed and lying in wait for her. Eventually, he left Katie alone when he struck up a new relationship.

Katie had two children from an earlier relationship when she met Scott. She and Andrew have three sons who they dote on but she hopes her other children will look for her when they grow up.

She added: “I have a much better life than I could have imagined, with a good man and great kids, but I am scarred for life mentally by Stefan Scott. Being raped and battered pretty much every day, being choked until you think you are going to die, you feel as though you hardly exist.

“But the worst thing of all, the thing that can’t be healed, is losing your kids.

“He is a monster and he will always be a danger to women. I just want everyone to be aware and make sure he can’t ruin anyone else’s life.”

Scott’s history of sexual abuse goes right back to when he was a teenager.

Eight years ago, as a teenager, he was served with a court order banning him from going near any girl in Scotland after he had sex with a 13-year-old and engaged in sexual activity with a girl of 12 in 2008, but he was not prosecuted. He was served with a Risk of Sexual Harm Order when he was 18 after having unlawful sex with a girl of 13 who he claimed he thought was 15. Even as the order was being sought by the then Chief Constable of Tayside, Justine Curran, in 2011, it emerged that Scott was also interfering with a girl of 12.

The Crown decided not to pursue charges despite his admissions and Scott remained free to rape, batter and abuse women.

The Judicial Office was asked whether consideration had been given to making an Order for Lifelong Restriction against Scott given the degree of violence his victims had experienced and the danger presented by his choking them. A spokeswoman said judges would not add to the comments made in court.

The Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service said they would encourage victims of sexual crimes to come forward and report them in the confidence they will be treated with professionalism and sensitivity by police and expert prosecutors.
