One area in Ireland facing -11C temperatures tonight amid Status Orange weather warning

A Status Orange weather warning is in place for 19 counties today as temperatures could drop to -11C tonight.

Met Eireann issued the ‘low temperature and ice warning’ for tonight, however Dublin has escaped the warning for now. The weather alert will remain in place from 6pm Wednesday evening until 12pm on Thursday for Carlow, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Longford, Louth, Meath, Offaly, Westmeath, Cavan, Monaghan, Clare, Cork, Kerry, Limerick, Tipperary, Galway, Leitrim, and Roscommon.

The Irish forecaster warned: “Extremely cold weather on Wednesday night with widespread temperatures below -5 degrees leading to severe frost and ice.”

However, weather expert Alan O’Reilly of Carlow Weather has warned temperatures could actually reach a bitter -11C tonight. He warned that the town of Birr can expect the severe temperatures.

“Latest update of HARMONIE model from Met Éireann shows -11c forecast for Thursday morning near Birr,” he wrote on Twitter.

Today

Frost and icy conditions for Dublin which will continue for the rest of the week. Temperatures will remain below freezing this morning and will climb to 1C in the afternoon. However tonight Dublin temperatures could drop to -4C with other parts of the country reaching -7C.

Thursday

Temperatures on Thursday in Dublin will remain below freezing for the morning. Afternoon temperatures will be between zero and +2C. Despite the cold, it will remain dry and sunny in Dublin. Northern parts of the country can expect rain and sleet.

Friday

Friday may be foggy, but mainly dry. The cold temperatures will continue with the afternoon reaching no higher than 1 to 4 degrees.
