We don't know whether the New York Post have been reading OMM's list of greatest cover songs, but they've published their own version, and included a bundle of dodgy tunes.
OMM's top 50 had its share of contentious numbers. Whitney Houston's remake of 'I Will Always Love You' was condemned as 'murder' by blog user gordonimmel, while Mozzer thought our inclusion of Oasis's 'I am the Walrus' was a stab at sarcasm.
But check out the Post's run down. It's heavily weighted towards a grim coven of nu-metallers indulging in Eighties nostalgia. 'Smooth Criminal' by Alien Ant Farm, 'Crazy Train' by My Chemical Romance, 'Wicked Game' by H.I.M. Each version a shallow, unoriginal trespass into pop arcadia. If anything, their fondness for covers suggests that they're scrabbling around for original material.
It is, of course, all a matter of personal preference, but patently some folks are more tasteful than others. All hail the transatlantic musical chasm.
