Omar Marmoush is poised to miss Manchester City’s derby with Manchester United on Sunday, and there are fears that a knee injury sustained against Burkina Faso could rule him out for a sustained period.

The Egypt forward was forced off in the ninth minute of the 1-1 draw in a World Cup qualifier in Ouagadougou on Tuesday.

City said: “Initial results on a scan performed in Egypt indicate he will not be available for the Manchester derby on Sunday, and he will now return to Manchester for more assessment and to begin his rehabilitation. Everyone at City wishes Omar a speedy recovery.”

Marmoush, who played on after receiving the injury on four minutes, has started City’s past two games, the 2-0 home defeat by Tottenham and 2-1 loss at Brighton that have left them with three points from the opening three matches.

Rayan Cherki is out with a hamstring injury that will sideline him for six weeks, and Phil Foden’s fitness is unclear after he missed the Brighton game. Erling Haaland scored five goals for Norway on Tuesday in an 11-1 win against Moldova.
