Omagh is going to be “filled with colour” as the town gears up for its third Pride event, organiasers say.
Oisin Donnelly, a volunteer at Omagh Pride, says the team are “looking forward to a more normal Pride [post-Covid], and touch wood it will all go well”.
“Omagh businesses have been really supportive since day one, and the reaction was so positive and heartfelt”, he adds.
People can expect flags and banners across the Co Tyrone town in the lead up to the official Pride event and local businesses have continued to show their support by having “their own decorations” in their premises.
Oisin has played an important role in “making sure everything is well organised” and says so far decorations have “filled the town with colour and brought so much life into Omagh”.
The Pride volunteer says he would “encourage people to get out and it’s a good opportunity to bring a buzz about the town”.
The day is set to begin with speeches before the parade starts in the early afternoon.
Speaking of the location Oisin says “we really are in the heart of the town and close to cafes and restaurants”, giving people taking part and watching the chance to spend money on food and drink in local businesses.
The parade will begin and end at the car park which is located at 5 Keblin Avenue and follow a circular path around Omagh passing the Courthouse, Strule Arts Centre and the Memorial Gardens before passing Scarffes Entry then back to the car park. Oisin is eocouraging people to come and see the parade, adding “If you are from Omagh or not come on down and have a fantastic day. Anyone can call in and stay 30 minutes or an hour”.
Omagh Pride will feature performances from Q Radio’s DJ Dylan McKee, drag queens and much more.
“It will be a fantastic event” Oisin adds.
Nine separate Pride events will take place this summer across Northern Ireland at locations including Omagh, Belfast, Midulster and Foyle. June marks the start of Pride season as it is celebrated globally to create a movement that is built on awareness and to honour the LGBTQ+ community.
