Omagh Pride holds vigil to remember men found dead in Sligo

A vigil is to take place in Omagh to remember the lives of two men found dead in Sligo this week.

The bodies of Michael Snee and Aidan Moffitt were found in the town earlier this week, with 22-year-old Yousef Palani charged with their murder.

Vigils are taking place across Ireland this weekend to remember the two men, with members of the Omagh Pride movement organising one in Co Tyrone.

People will gather at the Courthouse in the town at 7pm on Friday to remember Michael and Aidan.

Cat Brogan from Omagh Pride said it was important to remember the lives of the two men a reminder that people are still coming under attack as a result of their sexuality.

“It’s such a shocking thing to have happened we felt like we wanted to gather together to remember the lives of Michael and Aidan,” Cat told MyTyrone.

“We felt with Omagh being geographically close to Sligo and the fact we are around the same size as Sligo, we wanted to show solidarity with the LGBT people of Sligo and across the world who are still coming under attack as a result of their sexuality.”

A statement from Omagh Pride announcing the vigil said the deaths of Aidan and Michael was "truly chilling".

“Omagh Pride sends love, sympathy and strength to the friends and family of the victims as well as the Sligo LGBTQIA+ community.

“Omagh Pride recognises how challenging it is for LGBTQIA+ people in the North West of Ireland to find safe spaces to be themselves.

“LGBTQIA+ people in rural towns need support networks to ensure they feel loved and accepted.

“We welcome everyone to light a candle on Good Friday for Aidan and Michael and all those whose lives have been blighted by bigotry.”
