Olivia Newton-John's cause of death and who inherits her net worth

Olivia Newton-John, who would have celebrated her 74th birthday today (September 26), became a household name for her role as Sandy Olsson in popular 1970s film Grease, alongside heartthrob John Travolta.

Before she landed the role as Sandy, Olivia had numerous UK number one singles, including If Not For You, and she also competed in the Eurovision Song Contest for the UK in 1974.

After the success of Box Office hit Grease, she went on to star in Xanadu and Two Of A Kind.

Following her triumphant music and acting career, Olivia sadly passed away at her home in California at the age of 73 on August 8, 2022.

But what was Olivia's cause of death and who has inherited her net worth?

Here's everything you need to know.

The Grease star died in August following a long battle with breast cancer.

The news was announced in a statement which read: "Dame Olivia Newton-John passed away peacefully at her Ranch in Southern California this morning, surrounded by family and friends.

"We ask that everyone please respect the family's privacy during this very difficult time. Olivia has been a symbol of triumphs and hope for over 30 years sharing her journey with breast cancer."

She was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 1992 shortly after the release of her album, Back to Basics: The Essential Collection 1971–1992.

The diagnosis forced Olivia to cancel all publicity for the album, including the tour.

She initially recovered from the disease and later became an advocate for breast cancer research and other health issues.

Her cancer diagnosis also affected the type of music she recorded and in 1994, she released Gaia: One Woman's Journey, which chronicled her ordeal.

In 2008, the actress raised funds to help build the Olivia Newton-John Cancer and Wellness Centre in Melbourne, Australia, where she led a three-week, 228-km walk along the Great Wall of China and was joined by various celebrities and cancer survivors.

In May 2017, it was announced that Olivia's breast cancer had returned and had spread to her lower back.

She subsequently revealed this was actually her third bout with breast cancer, as she had a recurrence of the disease in 2013 in addition to her initial 1992 diagnosis.

With the 2017 recurrence, the cancer had spread to her bones and progressed to stage four.

Following her death in 2022, tributes flooded in from past co-stars and celebrity friends, including John Travolta.

He said in an Instagram post: "My dearest Olivia, you made all of our lives so much better.

"Your impact was incredible. I love you so much. We will see you down the road and we will all be together again."

John signed off the post on a heartbreaking note, "Yours from the first moment I saw you and forever! Your Danny, your John."

At the time of her death, the actress had a net worth of $60million (£55m), according to celebritynetworth.com.

Before her death, Olivia sold most of her assets to invest more into her charity and cancer research, according to a source close to the late star.

News.com.au reported that in 2019, the Grease star began selling most of her real estate, including her Californian ranch in the Santa Ynez Valley for $7.7million (£4.4m).

However, in October 2021, the actress transferred full ownership of her Santa Barbara estate, where she spent her final days, to her husband John Easterling, according to the New York Post.

A source told the outlet: "She was in a lot of pain, but she was a fighter.

“The place was her heaven on Earth and it gave her many calming moments in her final days.”

Olivia's husband and her daughter, Chloe Rose Lattanzi are likely to have inherited Olivia's remaining fortune following her death.
