Olivia Newton-John advocates for medicinal cannabis to be available in Australia

Olivia Newton-John has advocated for medicinal cannabis to be available and legal in Australia.

The Australian stage and screen icon was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer in 2017 - after beating the disease twice before in 1992 and 2013 - and spoke about how she stays positive during her health battle.

The 73-year-old wants medicinal cannabis to be made legal so those in pain can use it as an alternative treatment, and said the benefits of the drug can provide relief for anyone suffering with chronic pain.

“Medicinal cannabis is something that should be available to everyone who is going through a chronic illness or pain,” she told Who magazine, calling it a “healing plant”.

Olivia’s husband John Easterling grows medicinal cannabis on their ranch in the US for the Grease star to use to “help with her symptoms”, and wants it to be available for others to use legally.

Despite her cancer diagnosis, Olivia is trying to focus on the “positive side of things”, no matter what she's facing.

“Positive thinking is so important to living a healthy and happy life,” she added.

Olivia has previously called on the Australian government to approve the use of medicinal cannabis for cancer patients after she saw the “incredible healing abilities” of the drug.

The Physical hitmaker said she had tried a variety of traditional and alternative therapies, including meditation and acupuncture, and urged people to opt for “kinder therapies”.

“I have seen the incredible beauty of the plants and their healing abilities... if I hadn't had that experience, I wouldn't be sitting here talking to you about kinder therapies... your body wants to heal itself,” Olivia said.

She started her Olivia Newton-John Foundation to help fellow cancer sufferers, as well as the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Wellness & Research Centre, which gives treatments to patients.

The foundation also has “over 200 clinical trials in progress”, and also offers wellness and support programmes.

After beating cancer twice before, Olivia previously said she’s defied doctors' predictions and is fearlessly facing the disease for the third time.

“I am probably one of those people who's living beyond cancer, living beyond probably what people expected to happen,” she said.
