Unmissable show?
A show I absolutely love is [the US remake of] Getting On. It’s about the people who work in the geriatric unit of a hospital and is the funniest show I’ve seen in I don’t know how long. There’s one scene where they realise they’ve left these two 90-something patients in the waiting room together and when they go back they find the old lady giving the old guy fellatio and they’ve got to stop them before the head doctor sees. Words can’t describe how funny this show is.
Earliest TV memory?
Watching Punky Brewster and looking at this girl with pigtails, freckles and mismatched clothing and feeling a sudden connection to her. When I asked my mom if I could go play with her, she explained to me that she was an actress and probably lived in LA. That’s when I decided I wanted to be an actress.
Bring back…
The Wire, one of the best shows ever created. The brilliance of the show was the time they took with each storyline and each character, forcing you to watch every single moment or else miss a tiny integral piece. There is one moment in the show that was so special and brilliant, but you wouldn’t be able to truly appreciate it if you didn’t watch every episode. Marlo, who was the leader of one of the gangs, gave off such a formidable presence that he needed few words. There was this one moment when an owner of a corner store confronted Marlo for shoplifting and Marlo said simply “You want it to be one way… but it’s the other way.” That to me was what the show was all about. These gang members running the streets weren’t bad guys; they were simply living by the rules of the world that they lived in. Most of us don’t live in that world, so it’s easy to judge.
TV Turn-Off?
Reality TV that is clearly scripted, where fights and arguments are fabricated just to make plot points and to get the audience further invested. I think they should just say it’s scripted TV.
Bottom of the DVR?
Call The Midwife is one show I really want to watch. The reason I don’t let myself watch too many shows is because I get addicted and binge-watch all through the night and lose many nights of sleep. With this show, like so many others, I’ll have to wait until I think I can handle no sleep for a few days.
Pitch us a TV show…
A comedy starring Barack Obama and Sarah Palin as husband and wife of an all-American family in the suburbs… until one day a furry alien wiseguy crashes into their garage. Yes, I know I just took the show ALF and added in Obama and Palin, but it has “win” all over it.
The Newsroom: The Complete Second Season is available on DVD from 27 October
