Ole Gunnar Solskjaer pessimistic on Manchester United January signings

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has told Manchester United supporters not to expect many incomings or outgoings this month, despite the clamour for new signings.

United’s Carabao Cup defeat to Manchester City on Tuesday night highlighted the need for Solskjaer to strengthen his squad in the race for a top-four finish.

But Solskjaer warned fans against expecting any new additions to his squad and was guarded on Ashley Young’s potential move to Internazionale.

“We’ve still got the same thoughts we had a month ago,” Solskjaer said.

“We’ve got the players we have, working with the ones we have and if something happens we’ll tell you. I can’t say yes or no but I wouldn’t expect many ins and outs.”

Young, whose contract is set to expire this summer, has agreed to join Inter either as a free agent at the end of the season or this month for a fee.

But Solskjaer appeared reluctant to let his club captain leave when discussing the 34-year-old’s future.

“He’s one of our players, our captain. There’s loads of speculation. We’ve just got to handle it and Ashley’s been very professional and focused so I don’t think that’s going to change.

“[Whether he leaves this month] is a discussion me and Ash will have if it comes up. We haven’t got too many players fit and ready so we need the ones we have.

“Ashley’s been very very good for this club, he’s been a very good captain this season. So let’s see where we are in June and in February as well.”

United are particularly light in midfield and are assessing various options, with James Maddison, Jack Grealish and Donny van de Beek among those considered.
