Ole Gunnar Solskjaer made a vow during the summer transfer window - but was unable to keep his word.
The Manchester United boss was busy throughout the summer as he looked to strengthen his squad ahead of his first full season in charge.
He opened the chequebook tentatively at first, landing Welsh winger Daniel James for just £18million from Swansea.
After getting that transfer over the line the Norwegian went for broke breaking records.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka signed for the Red Devils from Crystal Palace for £55million - a record fee for a full-back. England international Harry Maguire then put pen to paper with the Old Trafford club after completing a transfer worth £80million.
In doing so Maguire became the world's most expensive defender in the process.
Romelu Lukaku's United future was the topic of much back and forth throughout the summer with Inter Milan keen on landing the forward.
United held firm on their price and eventually the Belgium international completed a £74million move to the Italian club.
Ahead of the transfer Solskjaer was asked whether he will replace Lukaku should he leave.
He responded resolutely: "If we sell players we will have to replace them."
It is not clear whether the Red Devils boss changed his mind or if he was unable to sign another striker due to the expensive of the Maguire deal following Lukaku's exit.
But either way United are short up top, and this is something the Norwegian will likely address in January.
