Ole Gunnar Solskjaer explains Man United’s Jesse Lingard transfer plan after West Ham loan

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says that Jesse Lingard will be welcomed back to Old Trafford at the end of the season following the end of his loan spell at West Ham.

Speculation has been rife that the Hammers will be attempting to sign Lingard on a permanent deal following a fantastic spell since arriving at the London Stadium.

Lingard has scored eight goals in his nine Premier League games for West Ham, and is currently the top scorer per 90 minutes in the division this season.

The Hammers are not the only side said to be keen, with Arsenal also reportedly keeping an eye on the situation.

However, Man United boss Solskjaer says that Lingard will come back to Old Trafford at the end of his loan spell, and says that he is making a good case for inclusion in the England squad at this summer's European Championships.

"Jesse has been brilliant since he left," Solskjaer told reporters. "Selfishly we could have kept him because he’s always got a part to play.

"He’s a fantastic lad and Manchester United through and though. Not once did he moan or cause me a problem earlier in the season.

"He came in and worked hard, he deserved to play more, that’s why we let him go to West Ham. We welcome him back and I hope he goes to the Euros, I don’t think that’s beyond him.

"I hope he’s got a strong finish in the league in him. It was different here because of the form of Bruno [Fernandes], who was playing in arguably Jesse’s favourite position.

"But I’m delighted for him and we just wish him the best for the rest of the season until he comes back."

Whether Lingard would be content to settle for a squad role at United with the likes of Fernandes and Mason Greenwood keeping him out of the team this year remains to be seen.

There is also the shadow of Declan Rice's future looming over potential negotiations, with Manchester United said to be keen and reports that the midfielder would be interested in a move.

However, football.london understands that any bids for Rice this summer would not be welcomed.
