A very glum-faced Ole Gunnar Solskjaer arrived at Man Utd's Carrington training base on Thursday amid rumours the club have already launched an approach for Mauricio Pochettino to replace him.
Pressure is mounting on the United boss once again after his side fell to a shock defeat to Champions League minnows Istanbul Basaksehir on Wednesday.
United are wasting no time in trying to rid themselves of any European hangover, as they reported for training to begin preparations for what now looks to be a must-win clash for Solskjaer against Everton on Saturday.
Like Solskjaer, there wasn't a smile among the United players as stars including Marcus Rashford and Bruno Fernandes wore sombre expressions as they passed through the gates at the Aon training complex.
First on the agenda for the United boss will be setting his stall out for the weekend's fixture at Goodison Park.
United have just 48 hours to prepare for the lunchtime kick-off, which Toffees boss Carlo Ancelotti will be a big advantage for his well-rested squad.
In the back of Solskjaer's mind will no doubt be reports coming from the MEN that United have approached Pochettino's representatives about potentially taking over the hot seat at Old Trafford.
Pochettino was a guest on Sky Sports earlier this week, where he admitted he was "ready" for a return to management after taking a year off since his sacking by Tottenham last November.
Solskjaer has continued to put on a brave show in the face of increasing criticism, insisting after the loss to Istanbul that he is not fearing for his job.
"I decline to comment on such a thing," he said. "Of course, it's early on and opinions are out there all the time. You've got to stay strong.
"I'm employed by the club to do a job and I do that to the best of my ability with my staff."
He now has to travel to Merseyside for his next task though - where the last acts of both David Moyes and Jose Mourinho took place before their respective sackings.
And Sky pundit Paul Merson feels Saturday's fixture is now shaped up to be make-or-break for Solskjaer.
"I think Solskjaer will be under severe pressure come tomorrow. Let's be honest, this is Manchester United," Merson told Sky after the Istanbul defeat.
"This is, for me, the biggest club in world football. Where they are in the league is not acceptable.
"It's not like it's two or three games gone. It's not just that but the performances have been poor."

He added: "I think it will be Solskjaer's - if he gets to Saturday - his biggest game in management.
"Pochettino was on Sky on Monday. People want to be seen. Managers come on Sky and people go, 'oh, I forgot Pochettino was out of a job'.
"I'm not saying Man Utd do but people do and fans do and it gets going, and I think Saturday if he's still in a job it will be the biggest game of his managerial career so far."
