Oldham residents face 2.99% tax hike following decision by council

Households in Oldham will be hit with a council tax price hike of at least £33 a year, following a decision by councillors.

Town Hall bosses approved the rise at a budget meeting on Tuesday night (February 23).

The 2.99 per cent hike will push the annual bill up by at least £33 every 12 months.

People living in Band A homes, which make up most of Oldham 's housing, will have to fork out an extra £2.78 a month before the parish council and mayoral precepts are added.

Band D properties will see their annual tax bills rise by at least £50.

Shaw and Saddleworth parish council, and Greater Manchester mayoral precepts will be added on top of this rise, pushing the final bill for all residents even further.

Councillor Abdul Jabbar, deputy leader of Oldham council and cabinet member for finance and green said: “This past year has been a real challenge for the council’s finances.

"The Coronavirus pandemic has meant that balancing the resources we have available with demands for spending has never been more difficult.

“We understand that many Oldham residents are also facing a challenge to balance their own budgets.

"This is why we have limited our Council Tax increase to 2.99pc because we know that even a small increase can make a big impact on people’s lives.

“These decisions are not taken lightly, but they are necessary to ensure we can keep supporting Oldham’s residents.

“Despite the challenges we face we will continue to strive toward an inclusive economy for Oldham – a place where everyone has a fair and real chance to improve their own lives.”

In Tuesday's meeting, cabinet members agreed on vital savings of £8.9m for the 2021/22 budget, which will be discussed before the full council on March 4.

Council tax can be increased by up to five per cent  without the need for a public referendum.
