Old Market 'bottle attack' leaves men in hospital with 'potentially serious' injuries

Police are investigating after two men were taken to hospital after a suspected bottle attack in Old Market.

Men aged 28 and 31 were assaulted in Waterloo Street at around 5.30am today (Sunday, July 7). Both were taken to hospital with potentially serious injuries.

An Avon and Somerset Constabulary spokesperson said: "It’s believed they were assaulted with a bottle.

“Police enquiries are continuing today and we’ll be carrying out numerous enquiries, including a review of CCTV from around the area."

A section of Waterloo Street around 70 metres long was taped off by police until around 2pm.

The road runs off West Street, between the Jack of Diamonds nightclub and Sofa Project shop.

An unmarked police van and forensic investigators remained on the scene as of 2.10pm.

A worker at nearby off-licence Old Market Express, who did not wish to give her name, said: "I did not see anything.

"I think this is a safe area. We have never had any trouble at the shop."

Hilda Allen, who works at Prior homeware shop, added: I saw the police had cordoned off the street when I came in at 11am.

"It was definitely a surprise. I have worked at the shop for three months and never seen any crime problems in the area."
