Oklahoma (0-0) vs. Houston (0-0) Game Preview
The last time we saw Oklahoma play Houston to open the season, Tom Herman’s 2016 Cougars dominated Baker Mayfield’s Sooners in a 33-23 win that wasn’t as close as the final score.
This time around, OU can’t blow it against a dangerous Cougar team.
New head coach Dana Holgorsen has the talent in place and the upside to at least compete for the American Athletic Conference title and possibly make a massive early statement against another loaded Sooner team.
After this, Oklahoma gets a break against South Dakota before going to UCLA. It’ll be the first look at Jalen Hurts along with what should be an improved defense, but they should be in for a fight.
Why Houston Will Win
Yeah, the Oklahoma defense should be a bit stronger, it should be tougher, and it should tackle a little better, It’s still coming off a year when it was dead last in the nation in pass defense, allowed 454 total yards per game, and couldn’t seem to do anything to slow down anyone’s attack, including Holgorsen’s West Virginia team.
Get ready for Houston.
D’Eriq King is one of the nation’s most exciting quarterbacks, the receiving corps might be as talented and good as any the Sooners will face this season, and the running game will be strong enough to keep up the pace. If you’re ready for a shootout, the Cougars won’t have a problem keeping up. However …
Why Oklahoma Will Win
The Oklahoma defense really will be a bit better. It’s not going to be Alabama on that side of the ball, but it should be just good enough to hold serve when needed.
The Houston defense that got ripped apart for 276 yards per game and was right there with OU at the bottom in college football in total yards allowed now doesn’t have Ed Oliver and four other starters.
The bigger problem is a run defense that loses five of the top seven tacklers. Oklahoma’s passing game will be in the spotlight with Hurts running it, but it’ll be the ultra-loaded group of Sooner running backs – along with Hurts – combining for well over 200 yards.
What’s Going To Happen
Be incredibly disappointed if this isn’t the most entertaining game of the opening weekend.
Both team will fire away at will, both quarterbacks will be amazing, and it’s going to be a scary-dangerous game for a Sooner team that will be pushed to the wall.
The OU running game will take over when it has to, it’ll own the time of possession battle, and it’ll get out alive.
