Ohio State’s Luke Pletcher moves up to No. 1 in his weight class

To the surprise of no one, Ohio State’s Luke Pletcher moved up to become the No. 1 wrestler in the country at 141 lbs after his victory at the Michigan State Open this past weekend.

Both InterMat and The Open Mat updated their rankings on Tuesday, and Pletcher moved up into the top spot. His title at the Michigan State Open included a win over then-No. 1 Dom Demas of Oklahoma in the final. Both rankings bumped Demas down to No. 2, with Penn State’s Nick Lee falling to No. 3, where Pletcher was ranked in the preseason.

Other Buckeyes

Kollin Moore is still the consensus No. 1 at 197 lbs, even with his closer-than-expected win over No. 16 Jake Woodley in the Michigan State Open final.

Freshman Sammy Sasso, who completely dominated the 149 lb weight class at the Michigan State Open, sits at No. 8 according to InterMat and No. 5 according to The Open Mat. Quinn Kinner, whose only losses at the Michigan State Open came to No. 4 Micky Phillipi, moved into the rankings at 133 lbs

Ohio State currently has no ranked wrestlers in either ranking at 184 lbs. It’s a long season, though, and the Buckeyes have shown a tremendous ability to always find the right roster under coach Tom Ryan. We’ll have to wait until February to see if this team is ready to compete for a national title, but early indicators are very good for the Buckeyes.
