Count this in the optimistic bucket for those of you looking for some mile markers on the way to a college football season. According to Dave Biddle of Bucknuts, the fine folks at Ohio State are set to welcome football players back on campus beginning Monday, June 8.
It does come with a bit of a caveat though. There’s still a vote by NCAA Division I Council about lifting the moratorium through May 31 of on-campus activities Wednesday that has to go the positive route (it appears it will). The Big Ten also has to lift its own band along the same lines and timeline. However, sources close to both believe that things will be lifted to some degree, even if in a slow and careful way.
If things go according to the way everyone thinks, that would be a significant domino that would need to fall to light the way towards a college football season this fall. There would still need to be plenty of hurdles to clear, and all kinds of safety precautions likely put in place, but simply having athletes on campus would be a big step in the right direction.
There is, of course, the state’s own social distancing and COVID-19 measures that would also need to be considered and adhered to with any return to workouts and on-campus activities.
Basically, the bottom line is while this is encouraging, stay tuned over the next week or so and we’ll know more.
