Ohio man does scan-and-go at Sam’s Club. Then he checks his bank account: ‘Chase Bank, do better’

A Sam’s Club shopper blasted the retailer after it charged his account multiple times for the same transaction. Then he learned how long it would take for him to get his money back.

In a TikTok clip with 3,606 views, user Kyle Fry (@kilofree86) called out both Sam’s Club and Chase Bank.

According to the Ohio man, he went shopping over the weekend at Sam’s Club and used the “Scan & Pay” option to check out his items.

He had used the service before, but this time he noticed something wasn’t quite right when he got home.

Did Sam’s Club Scan & Go overcharge a customer?

After Kyle got home and reviewed his transactions, he saw that the retailer had charged him not once or twice, but three times for the same purchase.

To make matters worse, as a Chase Bank customer, he couldn’t reach customer service over the weekend.

“I bank with Chase, couldn’t get a hold of nobody ’till Monday morning,” he explained.

By Monday morning, one of the charges had been reversed. The bank also reversed the other charges.

Anyone would hope the entire ordeal was finally over.

However, the following morning, he woke up to yet another charge.

“I’ve had four charges for the same scan-and-go from Sam’s,” he continued.

How Long Did Sam’s Club Take to Issue a Refund?

Even though Sam’s Club clearly overcharged him, he still couldn’t get an immediate resolution.

In fact, both the retailer and the bank allegedly told him it could take 7–10 business days to return the money to his account.

“They have charged me $800 in four transactions,” the man continued. “And now they are telling me that they have to wait to get my money back to me?”

Per Chase Bank’s website, the number of days it takes to receive a refund depends on how quickly a merchant processes it. Once they process it, they could take 1–3 business days to return the money.
However, it can take up to 10 days.

Ultimately, he implored both Sam’s Club and Chase Bank to do better.

The Problem With Scan-and-Go

This incident highlights a broader issue with frictionless checkout systems like scan-and-go, which are designed for speed but can create confusion when something goes wrong.

Because transactions are processed digitally and often instantly, errors can multiply before customers even realize there’s a problem, leaving them to sort it out after the fact with limited real-time support.

It also raises questions about how retailers and banks handle temporary financial harm. For many shoppers, having hundreds of dollars tied up for over a week isn’t just an inconvenience; it can impact whether they can pay bills, afford groceries, and other essentials. As more companies push cashless, app-based experiences, customers are increasingly expecting not just convenience, but also accountability and faster resolutions when things break down.

Nevertheless, retailers have touted scan-and-go checkout services for reducing checkout times and expediting transactions.

There are also Sam’s Club locations that only offer Scan & Go and have no physical checkout stations. These stores have also automated the system that verifies whether a shopper has paid for all of their items as they walk out. 30% of all of the club’s shoppers reportedly used the payment option when visiting the store in 2025.
