Governor Mike DeWine has been in public officer in the state of Ohio for about 40 years. From county prosecutor, to State Senator, to State Representative, to U.S. Senator, to Attorney General, and all the way to the Governor’s office. Without getting into the politics of it, you don’t win that many elections without talking to Ohioans or learning from Ohioans. And––again, without discussing DeWine’s politics–the Governor has obviously learned that Ohioans care about football.
It’s not just college football or Ohio State. The state, as a whole, cares about football at all levels, from youth to the NFL. The state obviously cares about other sports too, but football is clearly king in this state.
DeWine has been very clear about the need to wear masks and stay safe from COVID-19. He hasn’t mandated masks statewide–and he still won’t, even as he mandates masks in the counties with the biggest outbreaks–but he is strongly encouraging. And, knowing Ohioans, he and Lieutenant Governor Husted have started a campaign to move Ohioans where they care: football.
As such, the state, with the much younger Husted acting as spokesman, has begun an #IWantASeason campaign. The state government is being very clear: Wear a mask, wash your hands, and stay COVID safe. Otherwise, we won’t see sports seasons this fall.
