Odisha: Police burn 593 kg ganja in Malkangiri

KORAPUT: Malkangiri police on Friday evening burnt 593 kg of ganja worth Rs 60 lakh seized in the district by following the SOP issued by the Orissa high court for disposal of ganja and brown sugar.

"To ensure that the smoke from the burning contraband does not cause intoxication to people, we had sought the guidance of the Odisha State Pollution Control Board. According to their instructions, the ganja was escorted to Nalco's mining and refinery plant at Damanjodi in Koraput district and burnt after due procedure," said SP (Malkangiri) Nitesh Wadhwani. He said the burnt ganja was seized in five cases and 31.5 tonne of ganja seized from January to August 31 this year is still stocked in different police stations of the district. "We have sought permission for disposal of more ganja from the designated court," the SP said.
