Obsession Director Admits There’s A Giant Plot Hole In His $105M And Counting Film

Obsession

Horror movie fans are officially obsessed with Obsession. The new psychological thriller hit cinemas last weekend and has already become a breakout success, pulling in a huge USD$74 million (AUD$105 million) at the worldwide box office in its opening weekend alone. Naturally, people are already asking the big question: will there be a sequel?

Turns out, writer-director Curry Barker who masterminded the horror flick is definitely open to the idea, although he’s also admitted there’s one pretty major problem standing in the way.

The Obsession plot hole, explained

The film follows Baron “Bear” Bailey (played by Michael Johnston), a guy hopelessly in love with his childhood best friend Nikki, played by Inde Navarrette. Unable to tell her how he really feels, Bear ends up buying a mysterious “One Wish Willow” from a new age shop, which supposedly grants a wish once it’s broken.

In a moment of frustration, Bear wishes for Nikki to love him more than anyone else in the world and, well, considering the movie is literally called Obsession, you can probably guess that things spiral very quickly from there.

But while the supernatural premise has clearly connected with audiences, Barker has now admitted the Willow’s powers don’t entirely hold up under scrutiny.

Speaking to Total Film, the filmmaker confessed that the rules surrounding the cursed object are a little shaky, which could make expanding the story into a sequel complicated.

“I mean, it’s kind of a plot hole. It’s something I don’t like to think about too much, because it totally doesn’t make sense that there’s a world of people just making wishes,” he admitted.

“It really doesn’t make any sense at all. If the One Wish Willow actually works, which it does in this lore, and people are just making wishes left and right, there would be some crazy — like, dragons would exist. And none of that. The world is pretty normal from what we see in this movie. So, it doesn’t really make sense.”

Curry continued: “Here’s my take; every time someone makes a wish, they enter into an alternate reality where their wish comes true, so you’re not experiencing everybody’s wish at the same time.

“And that’s why — but that doesn’t make sense because the money falls from the ceiling. Yeah, it’s broken,” he added, referencing a scene from the film.

Will there be an Obsession sequel?

Despite the plot hole, Bear is still optimistic about extending the Obsession universe with a sequel or even a TV spinoff.

“I obviously have a couple more things that I’m excited about next, but I do see Obsession 2, maybe,” Curry added.

“Or even what really is exciting to me is maybe an anthology, like a one-hour episode. Each episode is a different wish that goes completely off the rails. Maybe I’ll direct the pilot with the same DP, and you could invite other filmmakers to kind of give their spin at it. That would be really cool.”

Either or sounds fab to us!
