Obi-Wan Kenobi release date, cast, plot and all you need to know about Star Wars spin-off

Star Wars fans have been hoping to see the return of Ewan McGregor ’s Obi-Wan Kenobi for years.

Particularly over the last seven years, fans have gained an enormous respect and love for the prequel trilogy, making this show all the more anticipated.

Not only will it see the titular character make a comeback, but it will also explore the earlier years of Darth Vader, long before we first met him in the original film.

It will bridge the gap between the prequels and the original trilogy for a six-part mini-series Disney event.

Here are all the details on the upcoming Disney+ series.

What is the release date of Obi-Wan Kenobi?

The show will drop exclusively on Disney+ worldwide on Friday, May 27.

It was originally set to release on May 25, but the streamer pushed it back from the Wednesday to a Friday, along with confirming episodes one and two would drop together on the new date.

May 25 was first chosen because that is the date the original film, Star Wars: A New Hope premiered in 1977, 45 years ago.

There will be six episodes of Obi-Wan altogether, with episode three dropping the following Friday, June 3.

The season finale will air on Friday, June 24.

Who is in the cast of Obi-Wan Kenobi?

The show is one of the most anticipated Star Wars projects since 2015’s Star Wars episode VII: The Force Awakens, due to the nostalgic cast it is bringing together.

For fans of the prequel trilogy, this is a must-see show.

Ewan McGregor is back as Obi-Wan Kenobi, playing an older version of the character he took over in 1999’s Star Wars episode I: The Phantom Menace.

This is still set around 10 years before the events of A New Hope though, so he is still younger than the Obi-Wan fans originally met in that film, previously played by Alec Guinness.

Joining McGregor is Hayden Christensen as Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader.

Neither stars have played these characters since 2005’s Star Wars episode III: Revenge of the Sith, so they did their homework before returning.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, McGregor revealed: "I watched them from start to finish, all nine movies. Just to get back in that world."

Christensen similar binged through Star Wars: The Clone Wars, the animated series that took place between Star Wars episode II: Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith, along with Rebels, which is set after the third movie.

He said: “It was interesting. They did a lot with these characters in those shows. And they did further explore the relationship.

“There was interesting stuff there to learn about. It was great fun getting to go back and re-immerse yourself in this world that just continues to grow and become more and more vast."

They aren’t alone in the cast though, as they will be joined by Rupert Friend as the villainous Grand Inquisitor and Joel Edgerton reprising his role from Sith as Owen Lars.

Bonnie Piesse is also returning to her role as Beru Lars, Moses Ingram is Inquisitor Reva and Grant Feely is playing the iconic role of Luke Skywalker, though at the age of 10 years old.

Rounding out the main cast in unspecified roles is Benny Safdie, Kumail Nanjiani, Maya Erskine, Sung Kang and Simore Kessell.

What is the plot of Obi-Wan Kenobi?

Hayden Christensen is back as Darth Vader (Disney)

Obi-Wan is set 10 years after the events of Revenger of the With, with the Jedi master now living alone on Tatooine, watching over a young Luke Skywalker.

At the same time, the Empire, led by Darth Vader, is hunting down Jedi that evaded Order 66.

Using his Inquisitors, they scour the galaxy for any trace of remaining Jedi, leading them to Tatooine.

The official plot synopsis reads: “Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi watches over young Luke Skywalker and evades the Empire's elite Jedi hunters during his exile on the desert planet Tatooine.”
