CNN interviewed Obama’s White House Chief of Staff, Rahm Emanuel, who was blunt about the situation. He said, “Just to give you a sense of how bad we are, the Democratic Party is less popular than Elon Musk right now. That should be like a wake-up call.”
Emanuel continued to say, “This is a moment of great disruption… People hate the status quo and they’re not too excited by change… This is what people wanted and then they’re not very happy with it very quickly.” and went over what happened over the years to cause the loss of confidence in the democratic party and the establishment it created.

According to the interview, in the last twenty years, three major events have deeply affected how people feel about politics: the Iraq War, the 2008 financial crisis, and China’s rise as a global economic power. Together, these events made many people believe that the system and those in charge always came out ahead while regular people suffered the consequences, with no one in power ever being held responsible. This feeling of being taken advantage of by the system, along with leaders avoiding accountability, has left many people furious.
This anger comes from a sense that they’ve been given a bad deal instead of a fair chance, and it helped create the conditions for someone like Donald Trump to rise by promising “revenge” rather than the usual talk of “redistribution.” In the past, the Democratic Party was often seen as the leader of big, bold change, represented by charismatic figures like John Kennedy and Barack Obama.
Meanwhile, the Republican Party was usually seen as more traditional, like a chief financial officer moving up to become CEO. But this has flipped. Under Donald Trump, the Republican Party became more about personality and character. At the same time, the Democratic Party has, in some ways, become more corporate, acting more like a “CFO becoming CEO,” losing its image as a force for radical change. This shift has turned away voters who want strong leadership and real transformation.
A big part of this public frustration is that the American Dream is becoming too expensive for many people. The basic promise of a middle-class life is slipping out of reach for more and more Americans. When the American Dream is only possible for a small, privileged group, it leads directly to political instability.
People stop believing in democracy itself when they feel their economic security is at risk and the system is stacked against them. To restore faith in democracy, the American Dream must become achievable again.
For the Democratic Party, the way forward is clear. They need to make a strong, focused effort to tackle the affordability crisis, especially when it comes to housing and homeownership, and after Obama’s blunt warning. This is about real assets and giving people a real stake in their communities, and stop taking votes for granted. While many are happy with their healthcare and don’t want to drain their retirement savings just to get by, housing remains a major problem.
The focus should be on issues that matter to everyday Americans’ financial worries, making the American Dream and the middle class the party’s top priority. The party’s current problems didn’t happen overnight, and fixing them will take steady work and a clear focus on real improvements to win back public trust.
