Oasis paid tribute to late Black Sabbath frontman Ozzy Osbourne as the Gallagher brothers returned to London 16 years on from their last Wembley performance.
A picture of the heavy metal vocalist was projected on stage as Oasis finished playing Live Forever before the group dedicated their next song, Rock and Roll Star, to Osbourne.
Noel and Liam Gallagher stood hand in hand on stage at Wembley as fans teared up and threw their pints in the air as Oasis opened their first of seven shows at the stadium.
During the final bars of Live Forever, a picture of Osbourne, who died at the age of 76 on Tuesday morning, was displayed, with the crowd cheering and applauding the gesture.
Liam Gallagher quickly added, “I want to dedicate this next song to Ozzy Osbourne” as the first chords of Rock and Roll Star rang out.
Tens of thousands of fans descended on Wembley ahead of the gig, with the stadium able to host 90,000 people.
Just a few weeks before his death, Osbourne had reunited with his Black Sabbath bandmates on July 5 to play a farewell gig at Villa Park – a stone’s throw from where the band was formed in 1968.
Osbourne, 76, had been battling Parkinson’s disease for over 20 years, having first been diagnosed with the disease in 2003.
Tributes were led by his Black Sabbath bandmates, including Terence “Geezer” Butler, Tony Iommi and Bill Ward, along with celebrity friends including Kiss star Gene Simmons and Queen guitarist Sir Brian May.
Fans of Osbourne have paid tribute to the Birmingham music star by laying flowers and lighting candles on Black Sabbath Bridge in Birmingham.
Black Sabbath formed in 1968 and were credited with shaping the heavy metal genre.
The group were inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame in 2006 and Osbourne was added for a second time, as a solo artist, last year.
In the noughties, he featured in MTV series The Osbournes, which followed the lives of him, his wife Sharon and two of their children, Kelly and Jack.
Friends of Sharon have said that they are deeply concerned about her after losing her “soulmate”. The couple had been married for nearly 40 years.
A source explained: “She is very, very fragile. We’re all terrified about how she will manage in the coming weeks. Sharon is being supported by loved ones, but the heartbreak is immense.”
