OAP support charity launches new group in West Lothian

A charity that aims to alleviate loneliness among older people has launched its fifth group in West Lothian.

Contact the Elderly organises scores of afternoon tea parties up and down the country each Sunday and already has groups in Armadale, Bathgate, Livingston and Whitburn.

The latest, at Almond Valley, is also based in Livingston.

And it enjoyed its inaugural tea party at the weekend hosted by West Calder resident Lorraine Colquhoun.

The aim of the charity’s parties is to offer a lifeline of friendship to members of the older generation who live alone and may be feeling socially isolated.

They are held once a month and provide an opportunity to enjoy a couple of hours of companionship over a cuppa with a small group of guests.

The gatherings usually take place in a local host’s home and guests are chauffeured door-to-door by volunteer drivers, eliminating transport worries, particularly for those who find it difficult to get out and about.

Contact the Elderly development officer Jennifer Kaney explained the events aim to support older people and ensure they continue to feel a part of the community.

She added: “It’s just such a simple concept – a catch-up over a cuppa – but it can have such a transformative effect on the life of an older person who doesn’t get that much chance to socialise.

“We’ve had such great support locally that we’ve been able to start another group which is great news for anyone feeling a bit lonely who would like an afternoon out in some lively company.

“Lorraine was a terrific host and put on a great spread which was really appreciated by everyone, guests and volunteers alike, who all had a really lovely afternoon out.”
