Just last week, the Oakland Athletics played a regular season MLB game that might as well have been behind closed doors. With only 2,703 fans in attendance, the A’s are practically facing a revolt from their fanbase amid ownership’s refusal to invest in the on-field product.
And it wasn’t just a one-game embarrassment. The A’s rank at the bottom of Major League Baseball in average attendance at 7,943 tickets sold per game (the actual in-person attendance is far worse). RingCentral Coliseum is so empty that it has been overrun with feral cats. It’s bad.
So, you’d think that the A’s front office would be the last ones to call out the attendance of other franchises, but apparently, Athletics president Dave Kaval has no shame.
He posted a series of tweets on Tuesday mocking the attendance at Oracle Park. Mind you, the photo he chose came before the game even started. But he didn’t care.

And though the game’s announced attendance of 32,898 was among the lowest ever for a Giants-A’s game in San Francisco, it was still a solid four times better than Oakland’s average attendance this season. He’s someone who answers to John Fisher and plays a part in everything that’s wrong with the A’s franchise. That’s just a stunning lack of self awareness to call out another team’s attendance, especially in a mid-week game that Oakland would lose by six runs.
Fans were quick to call out Kaval’s ill-advised tweets.
