NWSL Kicks Off its New Season With 14 Teams: The Latin Times' Cartelera Futbolera for March 11-17

SEATTLE - The 11th National Women's Soccer League is set to kick off this weekend with Portland visiting Kansas City. The 2024 season will mark the debut for newly-added franchises Bay FC and Utah Royals, taking the total of participating teams to 14.

Reigning champions NJ/NY Gotham FC will play the opener against last season's Shield winner San Diego Wave FC. Only North Carolina Courage (2018-19) was able to won back-to-back NWSL titles in the history of the league.

Also this weekend, Mexico's two biggest rivals will face off for the third time in 10 days in the newest rendition of Mexico's "Clásico Nacional" between Chivas and América. Following their two-legged CONCACAF Champions Cup tie, both rivals will square off in league play on Saturday, March 16. América has dominated the rivalry in recent years, winning six of the last nine meetings (6-1-2 W-L-D).

In Europe, four quarterfinal spots are still up for grabs in the UEFA Champions League, with the remaining teams seeking to join Real Madrid, Manchester City, Bayern Munich and PSG in the next round.

Barcelona will decide its matchup against Napoli at home, having tied the first leg 1-1. The 'culés' have had lackluster performances in recent years, failing to progress to at least the quarterfinals since 2018-19, when they crashed out of the competition in the semifinals against Liverpool.
