NWAS issues urgent warning as people in Manchester 'posing as ambulance staff'

The North West Ambulance Service has issued an urgent warning as people in Manchester have been 'posing as ambulance staff' and 'asking for donations' to pay wages during the strikes.

The trust has warned of scammers knocking on doors and asking for donations and clarified that those doing this are not employed by NWAS to encourage people not to give any of their money.

The post read: "We have been made aware that there are some people in Manchester posing as ambulance staff and knocking on people's doors asking for donations to pay wages whilst on strike.

"Please note these people are not North West Ambulance Service staff, so please don't donate. If you find their behaviour concerning, please report it to the police via 101. Thank you."

It comes as unions representing ambulance workers, paramedics and call handlers announced huge walkouts for the first time in history over long running pay disputes.

Unite union has announced that 1,600 workers at the North West, North East, and West Midlands ambulance service trusts will strike on Wednesday, December 21, 2022. The GMB Union also announced strike dates for more than 10,000 ambulance workers across nine trusts in England and Wales, on December 21 and 28. The pre-Christmas date coincides with action being planned by Unison too, with strike action announced again for December 21.

Earlier this week, on Monday night, The North West Ambulance Service issued an urgent plea, asking members of the public to only call the emergency line if absolutely necessary. Bosses also apologised for delays, as they said the service was extremely stretched across the region.
