Number of coronavirus cases in the UK nears 2,000

The number of coronavirus cases in the UK is nearing 2,000.

A further 407 cases have been confirmed today (March 17), bringing the total number of cases to 1,950, the Department of Health and Social Care has announced.

Twelve of those new cases have been in Wales. Follow live updates on the coronavirus situation here.

The surge in cases follows advice from the Prime Minister to avoid non-essential travel, work from home and stay away from social gatherings in a bid to stop the spread of the virus.

Those with underlying health issues, pregnant women and those aged 70 or older have been told to be particularly stringent in following social distancing measures.

The Government has asked that people now only use NHS services "when we really need to" in an effort to reduce the strain on health care workers.

They said the UK is just "three weeks" behind Italy, the worst affected country in Europe, which has nearly 28,000 confirmed cases.

Earlier this week, the country reported more than 360 deaths in a 24-hour period.
