NUJ strikers remain defiant after five weeks

National Union of Journalists' strikers at five of Johnston Press's Yorkshire newspapers remain defiant as they enter the sixth week of industrial action.

They have been on strike since 15 July in protest at the planned cutting of 18 jobs.

Pickets have been in place outside the offices of the Doncaster Free Press, Epworth Bells, Selby Times, South Yorkshire Times and Goole Courier.

Under the Johnston Press plans, the South Yorkshire Times, Goole Courier and Selby Times would be run under a single editor.

One striker, Kathryn Farr, told HoldTheFrontPage that NUJ members were determined to carry on with the strike: "Nobody is faltering, we are all resolute in what we are doing.

"The general feeling is that we will go on as long as it takes... We are still determined to succeed in this and get some sort of result."

Since the strikes, the newspapers have been produced by skeleton staff.
