NT per capita road toll highest in nation, after 3 crashes in 3 days

A 58-year-old man with a broken femur is one of three people injured in a serious car crash on Northern Territory roads in as many days, with CareFlight staff saying the per capita NT road toll is higher than all other states.

On Wednesday afternoon the man was airlifted to Royal Darwin Hospital following a single vehicle crash on the Savannah Way, about 65 kilometres east of Borroloola.

He remains in a stable condition.

About 4pm on Wednesday, a 5-year-old boy nearly drowned and was airlifted from Pirlangimpi on Mellville Island in a critical condition.

"I understand he is still quiet unwell but out well wishes are with that boy of course," CareFlight general manager Craig Gibbins said.

On Monday, six people, including three children were airlifted after they were injured in a car rollover on the Stuart Highway near Emerald Springs.

One woman remains in a critical condition in Royal Darwin Hospital while a six-week-old baby boy is serious but stable, all other patients have been discharged.

On Tuesday, a 50-year-old man was taken to Darwin Hospital with critical spinal injuries after he was involved in a car crash on a remote stretch of road near Woodycupildiya, in the Daly River region.

He has since been flown to Royal Adelaide Hospital to undergo further treatment for spinal injuries.

Mr Gibbins said the incidents have kept staff busy and is reminding drivers to stay safe on the roads.

"I'm very concerned... the NT is outperforming all other states per capita for our road toll at the moment," he said.

"We have a problem, it's not just the driving conditions, but I think we have a problem with the way we are approaching driving.

"Because of the amount of time we spend on the road, we get a bit blase about wearing seatbelts... but we know seatbelts save lives."
