NSW records no new cases of COVID-19 as restrictions continue

Epidemiologist says NSW could record additional COVID-19 cases in coming days

NSW has recorded no new locally acquired cases of COVID-19 in the 24 hours to 8:00pm Friday night.

There were 22,153 tests carried out during this time.

NSW Health thanked the community for responding to calls to get tested as they continued to search for the source of infection following the diagnosis of a man in his 50s earlier this week.

The man's partner was also diagnosed with COVID-19.

Woolworths at Double Bay has been added to the list of exposed sites, which includes venues in Sydney's east, northern beaches, and CBD.

People who where at the supermarket on Monday 3, from 10:45am-11:00am, have been advised to get tested and self-isolate.

Premier Gladys Berejiklian said she was pleased with how the state had handled the latest cases.

"The only concern for us is that obviously, at least one person has been in the community, going about their business for a few days not knowing they had the virus," she said.

"We know there's at least one, possibly more people that have been walking around with the virus."

NSW Health introduced additional COVID-19 restrictions this week, which have fallen during Mother's Day weekend, including limiting the number of people inside homes to 20, and mandatory mask-wearing indoors.

It comes after revelations that restaurant XOPP in China Town, which was visited by the man while infectious, had a very low number of people that had checked-in, raising fears of more community transmission.

The full list of venue is available on NSW Health's website.

Epidemiologist Professor Mary Louise McLaws said it will be a fortnight before Greater Sydney can say it has avoided more locally acquired coronavirus cases.

And while it was good the infected couple's close contacts have received negative test results, it's early days.

"I think this goes to show how fortunate we are," she said.

"Some people even with a high viral load don't necessarily spread it as effectively as some others, but it doesn't mean that we won't maybe see another couple of cases and in the next seven to 14 days."

There were six new cases in returned overseas travellers in hotel quarantine.

New restrictions remain in place across Greater Sydney until 12:01am on Monday, May 10.
