Novak Djokovic has announced that he will play at this year’s US Open.
The World No1’s participation in the event was up in the air, with defending champion Rafael Nadal and Nick Kyrgios having already withdrawn amid fears caused by the coronavirus pandemic.
But Djokovic took to social media on Thursday to announce his involvement at the New York Grand Slam, as well as the Cincinnati Masters, writing on Instagram: “I am happy to confirm that I will participate at @cincytennis and @usopen this year.
“It was not an easy decision to make with all the obstacles and challenges on many sides, but the prospect of competing again makes me really excited.
“See you soon New York.”
Djokovic came under fire this summer for his role in the Adria Tour of Serbia and Croatia. Several players on the tour, including Djokovic, who organised the event, tested positive for coronavirus after failing to observe social distancing guidelines.
Players were filmed playing basketball and also clubbing topless in the evenings after matches.
The Cincinnati Masters is due to start on 20 August, with the final taking place on 28 August.
The US Open is then set to take place between 31 August and 13 September.
It is soon followed by the rescheduled French Open, which will run from 27 September to 11 October.
