Notts Police could replace diesel cars with electric cars

Police will trial a fleet of electric cars to reduce emissions.

Police and Crime Commissioner, Paddy Tipping, said the force had to do their bit for the environment after officers can drive 'long distances' in their diesel-guzzling cars.

The force said this was another sign of their "commitment to a greener environment" as they press ahead with building a £17m new custody suite in Radford Road and a new combined headquarters with the fire service at Sherwood Lodge.

Both buildings will be 'highly energy efficient" with solar panels.

Mr Tipping said the force will buy four electric cars as part of an "experiment" - with the possibility of having all their cars replaced in the future.

The news was announced at the Police and Crime Panel held at County Hall on Thursday, February 6.

The vehicles are set to be on the streets by the summer.

Speaking after a meeting Mr Tipping said: "We run vehicles at the moment and they run on diesel, and like all diesel vehicles they’re pollutants.

"We want to show our commitment to a greener environment and the new builds we’re doing - both the custody suite and the new headquarters - will be category A rated which means they’re highly energy efficient. They’re all double glazed with solar panels and the rest.

"But just looking at the scene nationally we need to reduce emissions from vehicles and we need to pilot some electric vehicles. As part of the budget we’ve got provision for at least four vehicles. We’re going to experiment with them.

"The difficulty for the police is very often they have to drive long distances and that’s why we want to have a go and see what we can learn."

Asked where they were likely to be based, Mr Tipping said: "In the city and perhaps Mansfield."

When asked whether they would be rolled out more widely if the pilot is a success, Mr Tipping added: "Absolutely."
