Notts County players and supporters back fan after he was targeted by racists online

Players past and present at Notts County Football Club have got behind a fan after he was subjected to horrific racist abuse online.

Brandon Chambers of Nottingham received anonymous abuse on Twitter after he showed support for the Black Lives Matter movement.

From the messages being sent of Tuesday, June 2, he responded with a heartfelt video saying the comments had "hit home hard" that racism was still prevalent but thanked those who had offered support.

Among the messages the 24-year-old received were comments from members of the squad, past and present.

Kyle Wooton tweeted: "Shown great courage! Stay positive. We are with you"

Dan Leivers added: "So sorry that you’ve had to face this. Hopefully the world will wake up, no one deserves this. The Notts family is with you."

Richard Brindley posted: "Very proud of this man for how he has dealt with the racism received. It is no surprise to see the Notts County fans supporting Brandon - what a great club & community. Together ."

Mr Chambers responded to the messages: "Thank you to the current and former Notts County [players] who have reached out to me today.

"Thank you to the fans who have got me through what has been a tough 24 hours. I have so much love for you all. I love my club."

In an update on club matters including Covid-19, chief executive of Notts County, Jason Turner also included his support for Mr Chambers.

He said: "On a final note I would like to express my strong support for our fan Brandon Chambers, who last week courageously spoke out against some vile racist abuse he had received online.

"I was hugely proud to see a number of our players past and present, along with many fans, sending encouraging messages to Brandon at a hugely upsetting time for him.

"We consider ourselves to be an inclusive club which provides a safe and welcoming environment for all and the response to Brandon’s bravery shows these are not merely empty words."
