Nottinghamshire boy, 15, arrested on birthday for drug-driving on way to Skegness

A Nottinghamshire teenager was arrested by police on his fifteenth birthday after smoking cannabis before setting off to celebrate in Skegness. The boy was pulled over in Annesley Woodhouse on June 19 last year and provided a positive drug wipe.

It was also found that he did not have a licence or insurance and was subsequently arrested. Police constable Phil Broughton said the boy was on his way to celebrate his birthday in Skegness.

“Unfortunately for him custody don’t do parties and it was certainly a birthday that will last long in his memory – for all the wrong reasons," he said. “After I stopped the car, with the help of other officers, I noticed there was a strong smell of cannabis within the vehicle. The driver provided a saliva sample which returned a positive result for cannabis and he was arrested."

The driver, who cannot be named for legal reasons, pleaded guilty to driving under the influence of a controlled drug, driving without insurance and driving without a licence. He was handed a 12-month driving ban and a nine-month conditional discharge when he appeared at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on January 5.

A 22-year-old man, who was a passenger in the car, received a caution for the possession of cannabis. The arrest is one of the incidents to feature in an episode of Police Interceptors, which airs on Channel 5 at 8pm on Wednesday, April 27.

PC Broughton continued: “This incident just goes to show how we will always take robust action against anyone suspected of committing crimes on our roads and potentially putting themselves and other road users at risk.”
