Nottingham's hospitals had no new coronavirus cases at the start of the week for first time in more than 2 months

A medical microbiologist working at Nottingham's hospitals has confirmed there were no new positive coronavirus tests on Tuesday (May 26).

It is the first time Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust, which runs the Queen's Medical Centre and City Hospital, has reported that no patients being cared for had tested positive for the virus since the beginning of the pandemic.

The first cases were reported on March 12, the trust says.

However, NUH reiterated now is not the time to get complacent, as the number of positive cases outside hospital have still been increasing across the county, Public Health England data shows.

In Nottingham, two new cases were confirmed on Wednesday, May 27, since Monday, with the number rising from 599 to 601.

There were a total of 1,388 cases in Nottinghamshire on Wednesday, May 27 - which is only an increase of five new cases as compared to Monday, May 25, when there were 1,383.

The latest figures will be released by Public Health England later today.

Dr Tim Boswell, consultant medical microbiologist at Nottingham University Hospitals, said: “May 26 was the day that we have had no positive test results from all of the patients and staff we tested; they all had a negative polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test result.

"This is the first time this has happened since 12 March.

"Our lab team are working hard seven days a week and will continue to do so for as long as we need to.

"The 26 May Covid positive test free day doesn’t mean that we are out of the woods, but numbers of cases are falling. We all still need to play our part to reduce transmission.

"The lab is continuing to work really hard 7 days a week, and we are getting all the results out within 24 hours."

NUH conducts two tests for Covid-19, including the PCR test, which detects the actual virus to determine whether you currently have the infection, and the antibody test which looks at whether you might have had the infection previously.

There were no positive PCR tests on Tuesday, the trust said.
