Nottingham's Debenhams store will reopen with 'raft of new measures' to keep people safe

High street giant Debenhams has announced plans to reopen its Nottingham branch after a successful relaunch of 50 stores.

Debenhams, which has a large department store on Old Market Square, says its city store will reopen on Wednesday, June 17, with a "raft of new measures" to keep people safe.

It follows months of the store being closed as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, with fears at one point that the company may not survive the lockdown.

Administrators were called in and the company feared going into liquidation, however a rescue package kept the department chain alive and saved dozens of its stores.

The company's large branch in Mansfield's Four Seasons shopping centre was one of 50 stores trialled for the company's relaunch, which has been praised by bosses at Debenhams.

During the Mansfield launch, the company's new safety measures were in place across it's multi-floor department store.

The new measures include perspex screens at tills, providing staff with visors and gloves, and implementing queue management processes.

Steven Cook, managing director, Debenhams, said: “We were pleased with the first day of reopening in England yesterday, following the reopening of our Northern Irish stores last week.

"Our customers have been complimentary about the safety precautions we have introduced.

"It is very early days of course, but we look forward to opening most of our remaining English stores on Wednesday.

"Longer-term, there will be plenty of issues to be resolved, notably around unsustainable rates bills, if the High Street is going to get back onto a sustainable footing."
