Nottingham Light Night returns with dozens of installations set to illuminate the city

Nottingham will be home to more than 30 immersive and interactive light-based installations, performances and activities this weekend as a popular after dark event returns to the city. The Light Night event will run on Friday and Saturday, February 3 and 4, and has been organised by Nottingham City Council in partnership with Nottingham Business Improvement District, the organisation behind It's in Nottingham.

The 'Pulse' attraction will be located in Old Market Square, which is a large-scale light sculpture that explores the perspectives of audio-visual perception designed by the creative team Loop. The attraction has more than 14,000 individually programmable LEDs across twelve large mirrored rings, which are all tightly synced and choreographed.

Evanescent is another highlight of the event, which is an immersive light and sound environment that aims to capture the concept of transience in the form of a large bubble. The artwork was inspired by the pandemic and created by Sydney-based design studio Atelier Sisu, which communicates this feeling of the world stopping and the need to live in the moment through the bubble, which will be located at Sneinton Market Square.

Other attractions include The Nectary on Carrington Street where visitors can experience ‘the hum of the earth’ as they mimic pollinating insects underneath huge glowing flowers. At Nottingham Contemporary The Tom Dale Company and Inspire Youth Arts will have youth dance groups performing alongside professional dancers, celebrating light, choreography and electronic music.

St Mary's Church will also be taken over by Inspire Youth Arts, who will be using their Re-Move installation to explore human displacement and the consequences of climate change.

Cllr Pavlos Kotsonis, Portfolio Holder for Leisure, Culture and Planning at Nottingham City Council, said: “Now in its 15th year, I’m delighted that Nottingham’s Light Night will once again open-up spaces after dark and illuminate our city centre, with many free events and activities for everyone to enjoy, shining a light on Nottingham’s communities as we celebrate our diverse city."

Alex Flint, CEO of Nottingham Business Improvement District, added: “Light Night offers unique, innovative experiences for the community and visitors to explore Nottingham's city centre at night. A lot of people and families enjoy the rich selection of businesses along the way, which is beneficial for our members.

"It's great to have such a stellar line-up of installations to reinforce Nottingham's creative reputation with a winter event that will kick off the new year right."

Visitors can plan their trips in advance by using the Light Night App and there will also be a small number of pre-printed guides available from the Tourist Information Centre and at key locations on the day.
