Nottingham Forest man completes Championship transfer

Nottingham Forest defender Tobias Figueiredo has become the first official signing of Hull City’s summer transfer window, after finalising a free transfer move from the City Ground.

The powerful central defender has agreed a two-year contract at the MKM Stadium with the Tigers also holding the option to extend it by a further 12 months. The 28-year-old was released by Reds’ boss Steve Cooper following their Wembley promotion victory over Hull’s Yorkshire rivals Huddersfield Town last month.

A regular for Portugal at various age groups where he earned more than 60 caps, Figueiredo spent five seasons on Trentside after moving from Sporting Lisbon, making more than 100 appearances in the Championship.

Last term, Figueiredo clocked up 26 appearances as Forest recovered from being bottom of the table in the early weeks of the season to beating the Terriers 1-0 in the play-off final at Wembley and securing promotion to the Premier League. Despite appearing to be out of favour following the arrival from Bournemouth of Steve Cook, Figueiredo returned to the line-up in the closing weeks of the campaign following Cook’s injury, playing a big part in a fine run of form which ultimately saw the Reds fall short in their quest to snatch automatic promotion.

He was an unused substitute in the Wembley final, before being allowed to move on to pastures new, and City have snapped him up despite interest from elsewhere in the second-tier.

Figueiredo has been joined at Hull this week by Mali international midfielder Adama Traore and Turkish midfielder Ozan Tufan, with an announcement on Traore’s arrival expected in the next 24 hours.
