Nottingham Forest make Lewis O'Brien transfer decision after Wayne Rooney plea

Nottingham Forest midfielder Lewis O'Brien will reportedly not be staying at DC United when his current loan spell at the club expires this weekend.

The 24-year-old has been playing football stateside since March after a January deadline day deal with Blackburn Rovers fell through due to late submission of paperwork. He has made 18 appearances for the MLS side, where he has scored one goal.

But his current loan spell in the US expires on July 16 and with the MLS season not ending until October, DC United may be set to miss a key player for the remainder of their campaign. Manager Wayne Rooney has previously spoken of his desire to extend the deal until the end of their season.

However, journalist Alan Nixon reports that O'Brien will be heading back to the City Ground after the Reds "said no to the extended loan request."

O'Brien joined Forest from Huddersfield Town last summer but failed to become a first-team regular. His lack of game time led to the player looking for a loan move in January.

He was left out of Steve Cooper’s 25-man squad for the second half of the campaign after his move to Blackburn fell through, with the player appearing unlikely to have a long-term future at the City Ground. Forest will also look to strengthen in his position this summer.

Premier League new boys Sheffield United have been linked with a move and he also has admirers in the Championship.
