Nottingham Forest boss Chris Hughton expresses concerns about games being postponed

Nottingham Forest boss Chris Hughton says the post-Christmas period will be crucial when it comes to matches potentially being called off for positive coronavirus tests.

A number of English Football League clubs have had matches postponed due to cases of Covid-19 among players and staff.

Millwall reported an outbreak on Monday - two days after they had hosted the Reds at The Den - which led to their next two games being called off.

Forest carried out a full round of coronavirus tests on Tuesday morning, as a precautionary measure, following their 1-1 draw against the Lions - and they are expected to receive their results today.

The season has already been condensed into a shorter than normal timeframe because of the pandemic, with fixtures which will need to be rearranged only adding to that hectic schedule.

Hughton’s side have not been impacted on that front, so far, but the Reds manager says it could become a concern if clashes have to be moved in the new year.

Asked if he is worried about the season being able to finish, given the positive tests being recorded across the division, he said: "We're not at that stage yet. We've been concentrating on getting through games.

"The deciding times will be post-Christmas. More clubs are having to cancel games in an already tight season.

"At this moment the concerns aren't so great. If the rise affects the game post-Christmas then you'll get teams who have had games called off and can't afford too many others to be called off.

"It will be a concern if games are called off after Christmas."
