Nottingham brewery Castle Rock wants to attract butterflies and bees as well as pub-goers

Nottingham brewery Castle Rock has been working for more than 20 years to bring in wildlife to their venues as well as pub-goers. They have long been partnered with Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust to embrace nature and sustainability.

Castle Rock Brewery takes part in the Wildlife Trust's 30 Days Wild challenge where they find ways to do something wild every day in June. Previously they have introduced pollinator hanging baskets in their beer gardens but they have taken a sustainable twist this year.

Vicki Saxby, operations director at Castle Rock Brewery, said: “For many years now, we have been making a real effort to ensure our pub gardens are bee and butterfly friendly, and we are finding new and creative ways to be as sustainable as possible in the process.

"We’ve made beautiful plant pots from bourbon barrels we used to barrel-age beer, 'living fences' out of old pallets and climbing plants, and so on. Due to the lockdowns, I had been able to grow and nurture the pub flowers myself, but this year we are delighted to have teamed up with Woodthorpe Grange Park to add a mixture of seasonal colour and perennials to our outside spaces.”

Vicki added: “We’re also adding a new green space to an unexpected part of the city. Yarn, our joint enterprise with the Theatre Royal & Concert Hall, has a little-known rooftop terrace that looks over the city. Before June is over, we hope to have herbs pots, flower pots, climbing trellis plants and tiny trees."

"It should provide a welcome respite in the middle of city for passing bees, bugs and butterflies.” Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust offer inspiration on ways businesses can be more sustainable and wildlife friendly on their website.
