Notre-Dame roof collapses as people share heartbreak over fire at historic Paris cathedral

The roof of Notre-Dame cathedral has collapsed amid a horrific fire at the famous Paris landmark.

Dramatic pictures from the scene show the devastating impact of the blaze which broke out shortly after 7pm (CEST) on Monday afternoon.

One of the iconic spires at the world famous site has also now collapsed.

There have been no reported injuries so far, according to a French minister.

Taking to Twitter, users posted their heartbreak over the tragic incident at the "historic and important building".

French President Emmanuel Macron took to Twitter in the wake of the horrific incident.

He wrote: "Our Lady of Paris in flames. Emotion of a whole nation. Thought for all Catholics and for all French. Like all our countrymen, I'm sad tonight to see this part of us burn."

US President Donald Trump tweeted: ''So horrible to watch the massive fire at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. Perhaps flying water tankers could be used to put it out. Must act quickly!''

Pamela Robertson wrote: "I feel sick watching the Notre Dame fire footage. The spire has collapsed now.

"It's heartbreaking to watch the destruction of this historic and important building at the heart of one of the most beautiful cities in the world.

@Hemsobrien said: "I’m genuinely concerned about Notre Dame. How did that happen?? My heart is breaking."

While @jksmaone commented: "notre dame’s cathedral... my heart is broken, 856 years of history gone like that."

Alex Barnett also posted: "Heartbreaking hearing the reports that the spire of Notre Dame has collapsed in the fire."

The bones of the centuries-old building are now visibly exposed by the flames which can be seen raging from between the building's bell towers.

The Notre Dame is visited by some 12 million people every year and is one the finest example of French Gothic architecture in Europe.

Paris prosecutor's office says it has started an inquiry into the blaze.
