Disney has pledged nearly £4 million to a fund to restore Notre Dame cathedral after total donations soared past one billion euros.

The entertainment giant’s CEO pledged $5 million (£3.8m) on Wednesday, labelling the iconic building a “beacon of faith".

The billion-euro mark of donations was reached on Wednesday following major donations by French companies and billionaires.

Disneyland Paris lies just 40km from the Gothic cathedral, which caught fire on Monday.

Chairman and CEO Robert Iger said in a statement: “Notre Dame is a beacon of faith, hope and beauty, inspiring awe and reverence.

“The Walt Disney Company stands with our friends and neighbours in Paris, with heartfelt support and a $5 million donation for the restoration of this masterpiece.”

Disney famously recreated the cathedral in its animated film The Hunchback of Notre Dame, based on Victor Hugo's novel of the same name.

Senator Ted Cruz was criticised for his reaction to the announcement after he tweeted a link to a news story with the comment: “Wonderful! Will we see Disney princesses in the new stained glass?”

The restoration fund grew rapidly following a €200 million (£174 million) donation by cosmetics multinational L’Oréal, which followed a similar donation from the LVMH luxury goods group run by France's richest man Bernard Arnault.

Billionaire François-Henri Pinault and oil company Total also pledged €100 million (£87 million) each.

The burned-out cathedral could be closed for up to six years following the catastrophic blaze.

Authorities said they have no estimation of how much the work will cost and the cause of the inferno is not yet known.

Around 400 firefighters battled the fire into the night and tried to salvage artwork and other priceless pieces stored in the 12th-century cathedral.

Paris Fire Service later confirmed that Notre Dame's structure and main works of art have been saved.
