NotebookLM Now Speaks 50+ Languages – Here’s How It Works

Google has rolled out multilingual support for Audio Overviews in NotebookLM. The Audio Overview feature is one of the most popular features, and now it allows users to listen to summarized insights in over 50 languages. Here’s everything you need to know about:

Audio Overviews, introduced late last year, turn uploaded sources into podcast-style summaries. With this update, users can now generate these overviews in their account’s preferred language, covering a wide range of languages, from Afrikaans and Hindi to Turkish and more.

Moreover, the update also adds a new “Output Language” option in NotebookLM, which users can access via settings. This option allows users to choose the language in which their audio summaries and chat responses are generated. However, it’s not fixed and can be changed at any time.

For example, a student working on a project about the Amazon rainforest could upload materials in English, Spanish, and Portuguese and still generate an audio summary in their native language.

The feature uses Gemini’s built-in audio capabilities and is now live for users in more than 200 countries. Google says this is an early version and will continue to refine it based on user feedback.

How do you generate AI podcasts in different languages on NotebookLM?

Here’s a quick guide to using the new multilingual Audio Overviews feature:

  • Open Your Project: Go to your NotebookLM project where you’ve uploaded your sources.
  • Go to Settings: Click on the Settings button in the top right corner.
  • Choose Output Language: Find the “Output Language” option and select your preferred language from the drop-down list.
  • Click Save: Hit “Save” to apply the changes.
  • Generate Audio Overview: Now, when you generate an Audio Overview, it will be created in your selected language — even if your documents are in English or another language.

That’s it. You’ve now created a multilingual AI podcast using NotebookLM. However, that’s not all. Recently, the company added a new “Discover Sources” feature, which enables web-based search for relevant information directly within the platform. Besides, there’s a new “I’m Feeling Curious” button as well, which educates on random topics to showcase the feature in action.
